Solutions to the most common exercise excuses

I’m too tired
Getting fitter will mean you feel less tired and getting a routine will help you feel less tired. People who are tired vegging out in front of the TV aren’t stimulating their brains or bodies and that will leave them feeling lethargic.
You need to set a goal and you’ve got to want to achieve it. You’ve got to find your why. Understand why you want to change that behaviour. If you don’t understand why you want to change the behaviour, then you won’t have progress.
Two questions you need to ask yourself: Why is that important to me? How does it make you feel? Most people will have some underlying motivation and that motivation will override most excuses. Drive the desire not to be tired.
I don’t have time
You have time you need to prioritise the time. It’s about finding time that works for you. You don’t have to do long workouts; most programs are 45 minutes. Or go to a short, higher intensity group fitness class like SPRINT. You absolutely have time.
Exercise isn’t fun
Sometimes it’s not and it doesn’t have to be enjoyable. Find what’s fun for you, try a dance class if you enjoy dancing, or go to the gym with a buddy if you like having some friendly competition, go for a walk with your dog.
The exercise itself doesn’t necessarily have to be fun but it enhances all other aspects of your life. It makes your lifestyle more fun. Enter a competition so you have something to work to. Ask the trainers how to make it fun or use the virtual trainer to take the thinking out of it for you. Use the Maroondah Leisure app and take part in those workouts or challenges.

Gyms are intimidating
Sure there are some gyms that are intimidating and even the size of Aquanation can seem a little intimidating. The first thing I tell people when they walk into our gym is have a quick look around at every other person here, not one of them is looking at you or anyone else. We have very few mirrors so this gym is not about body image.
Remember, you are coming in to be the best person you can be. If you’re unsure, stick your hand up and ask the trainers here at Aquanation and at Aquahub are here to help you. Remember when you were a kid in class and you had to spell a word out loud in front of everyone? You were scared and stiff, the second time you had to spell it you were fine because once you learned how to spell it you knew what to do.
It’s a habit and it’s the same thing in the gym, once you start learning you become educated in what you’re doing. You’ve got your goal and the intimidation goes away. The staff are here to support you and if they didn’t love supporting people in achieving their goals they wouldn’t be in this job. We want this to feel like your home.
Consistency will also beat intimidation. Come in consistently and everything will become more familiar.
