Why winter swimmers are safer in summer

Children learning to swim at Aquahub

It might be tempting to take a break from swimming lessons, or hold off starting lessons over the cooler months, but there are many benefits to swimming throughout winter.

Benefits for children:

  • Maintain swimming ability.
It’s easier for children to progress when they attend regular lessons. When they return to swimming lessons after a break, they may not be able to return to the same class/level that they were previously enrolled in.
  • Confidence in themselves.
When children are familiar with water, they have less fear towards it. Plus, maintaining skills helps with their self-esteem.
  • Keep them healthy.
Maintaining physical stamina helps strengthen children against illness.

Benefits for parents and carers:

  • Peace of mind.
Your child will keep building their water safety skills which will help lower the risk of drowning.
  • Get more value from your membership.
If lessons are stopped and started, children need more time to settle in and more lessons to progress.
  • Don’t pay joining fees.
It may be more cost-effective to continue your programs membership all-year round and utilise your freezes (suspensions) as required, rather than to cancel over the cooler months and rejoin.

So when summer returns, the whole family can enjoy a visit to the pool, beach, lake or river that little bit more.

How to fast track your child’s swimming progression

  • Consistently attend weekly swimming lessons. This helps students remember what they learned a week ago so they can continue to build their skills.
  • Practice casually. Pool access is included in your child’s programs membership. Swimming in addition to their weekly swimming lesson doesn’t cost extra - and most children love to show you what they can do.
  • Book into a second weekly swimming lesson. We provide 25% off the second booking.
  • Book into our Holiday Intensive Swimming Programs. We see great progress in students’ swimming ability when they attend the 5-day intensive program, run each school holidays.
